Perspective

So I finally did it! I picked my focus word for the year. This wasn't supposed to be such a stressful exercise but in true Jessica fashion, I made it that way lol! When thinking through different words that encompassed my goals for this year, I came up with: strengthen, mindset, focus, change, and belief before I finally decided that perspective is really what I need to put my energy into.

I want to change my perspective when it comes to the difficulties we've had with infertility. This isn't something that I have control over but I do have control over about how I think. I really want to trust in the Lord and His timing for us during this time. That has to do with my perspective and has to be a daily choice with how I look at our situation.

I want to work on my perspective when it comes to comparing myself to others. It's so easy to look at the "highlight reel" of social media and just feel bad about ourselves. There's nothing wrong with my life, but I see others doing things that I want for us, and it's just a bad feeling. Envy is nobody's friend and I need to change my perspective to be thankful for everything we have. This goes hand in hand with wanting a baby. I'm so thankful for the time Mark and I have had together as a married couple. We've gone on awesome trips, had lots of freedom to do last minute things, and just grown together as adults. This is time we won't get back, so I'm trying really hard to just appreciate all those moments. Do I wish we had a little baby Bradford strapped to us during it all??? Well yeah, but one day we will. :)

Perspective is also super important during change. Ugh, that word...change. Doesn't that just make you cringe?? No, just me? Okay, well I really like love to plan and know what's going to happen next. When I'm thrown into something new, it (literally) throws me off and makes me feel very uneasy. This is something I want to work on this year. My friend, Carly, has really great perspective on all things in life, but especially change. I want to follow the advice that she has given me this year. Thanks Carly!

I've also shifted gears with how I want to run my Rodan+ Fields business. When I first started, I just wanted to share the products and was scared to build a team. I was so scared that no one would understand what I was doing, or would want to join me. Once again, my perspective needed to shift for me to unleash my full potential and the full potential of this business. Now, I don't feel like I'm trying to get people to join me,  I just want to share about this incredible business that has opened so many doors for me. I cannot imagine what my life would look like today without it. Now, it's time to dig deeper and make this bigger than I ever thought possible.

Now this might be the strangest goal of mine, but I really want to get more sleep. I know that makes me sound super old and boring but I am the worst sleeper. I am exhausted after work (from lack of sleep) and then get my second wind around 9 pm. I find myself on Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest... you name it, until almost midnight. Then I feel like a zombie the next day and the cycle continues. I really want to make sleep a priority and put down the dang phone while I'm in bed. My friend, Emily says that she's working on staying off her phone an hour before bed and I think this is huge. I am joining you, girl! This takes a perspective shift... yes, I want to binge watch all the shows I like, and yes I want to read all the blogs I follow, but going to sleep and feeling rested is also super important for my health. Does this mean I'm a grown up now??

Church also needs to be more of a priority. When we have a busy weekend, attending church seems to be the first thing to go. I know how important it is to be filled up each week by the word and I definitely feel a difference when I don't attend. This also goes along with making morning devotions a habit. Since, I don't get a ton of sleep, waking up is the worst for me. I am such a grump in the morning and it takes me awhile to feel awake and ready to start my day. Choosing to read my devotion first thing in the morning will really start my day in the best way possible. Once again a perspective change. It's not something I HAVE to do, but want to do. :)

So what are your goals this year? Do you have a focus word? I would love to hear all about it. I think that setting goals for yourself is HUGE! It gives you focus for the new year and also keep you accountable.

My word from last year: grow.

Whole30 Diaries: Getting Started

Happy Monday everyone! Since it's the first day of the week, you are probably expecting a Weekend Recap but I was pretty terrible at taking pictures this weekend, except for food haha. Sorry! Our life pretty much revolves around our next meal because we are a week into the Whole30. So I thought I would share a little about the Whole30 and some of my tips for surviving. Plus, my friend Dina shared this hilarious blog and I thought you might want to hear about my experience as well.

If you're wondering what in the world the Whole30 is, click here to get all the details. Basically it's a program to eliminate legumes, sugar (including alcohol), dairy, and grains for 30 days. These items can cause all different kinds of issues with your body, but it's also just a great way to reset your metabolism and kick the sugar addiction. If you're like me, then you ate a ton of sweets over the holidays. Even if you didn't eat cookies and candy (and more cookies), you probably just ate more than you normally do and worked out less. It happens, but then it's time to get back on track.

I've done the Whole30 before and I always like my results. I sleep better, I make healthier choices, and I reset that nasty sugar addiction that always seems to catch up with me. The Whole30 isn't a diet but I do usually lose weight from cutting out the processed junk and dairy.  If you go right back to how you ate before, the weight will come back though. The idea is to change your eating habits for the long haul, not just the 30 days. The first time I did the Whole30, I actually stopped drinking soda and haven't gone back since. Well, I have a couple a year but no where near the Diet Coke obsession I had previously. :)

Even though I've done the Whole30 before, this is the first time that Mark is joining me for the adventure. I feel like I am prepping way more food, because the man eats a lot more than I do, but I'm totally fine with it because it's nice to have the support. Doing this with a buddy is so important! It keeps you accountable and plus you don't want to quit because how embarrassing would that be lol??

So step number 1, find a friend to be your accountability partner or get your significant other on board. This will help when you go through all the emotional changes too... oh yes, you will become a grump at certain points.

Step 2- Read and understand the guidelines of Whole30. It stinks to buy everything for a recipe and realize that you can't have peanuts or soy.

Step 3- Plan ahead. Don't let yourself get hungry while you're out and about ,without snacks: nuts, fruit, Lara Bars, beef jerky, RX bars, etc.

Step 4- Stock up. It's so important to have your house stocked with plenty of meat, fruit, and veggies. That way, you won't have to run and get something when you're trying to make dinner. Also, these pantry staples make the Whole30 a lot more enjoyable. We also pretty much stock every flavor of La Croix. We love them anyways but they become essential during this time. Plain water can get so boring and these actually start to taste super sweet because your taste buds start adjusting to what you've been eating. My favorite flavors are passionfruit, mango, and apricot. Mark loves the coconut one too!

**Dina also told me about the Tessemae dressings and holy moly they are good! I am heading to Whole Foods to the ranch and mayo tomorrow.

Step 5- Meal plan. This goes right along with stocking up because if you meal plan, it takes the guess work out of trying to figure out what you are going to make for dinner, when you're already tired and hungry. On Sunday, I plan out my whole week, including options for snack food. We usually eat leftovers for lunch, so I make sure I'm making enough servings, and then buy "emergency" meal staples like chicken & apple sausages.

Step 6- Research a variety of recipes. Don't cook a big batch of something and plan on eating it everyday. This will make you hate everything lol. I made that mistake the first time. Try to change it up and give yourself a wide variety of options. Also, this is the first time that I've had the Whole30 cookbook and there are some great recipes. Invest in this too! You can get it at Costco for a good price.

I hope that some of these tips help you on your way to starting Whole30. I'll be sharing an update on our first week soon!

Cheers to a new you! Don't worry it's water in the cup :)

Five on Friday: January Confession Edition

Just because I love him! :) Davy is adorable

Good morning everyone and PRAISE THE LORD, it's Friday!!!! This has been the longest, short week ever haha. I really, really need to get some sleep this weekend and recharge. Getting more sleep is actually one of my goals this year... lame I know, but I am a terrible sleeper and it makes me so grumpy in the morning and I know it's bad health-wise too. This is the year of more sleep... hah maybe! If we finally have a baby, I would be fine with the no sleep part :)

1. I'm in a reading rut, I want something new and inspirational! I feel like I've read a lot of books by the same authors in the last couple years and I want some fresh blood. That sounded creepy but you know what I mean! I just ordered this book by Romi Neustadt and I can't wait to read it. No, I'm not full of myself lol (if the title made you think that I am), but the book is about getting out of your own way and building your business. I'm so excited about this read!

2. I'm turning 30 in about a month... crazy right? Didn't I just turn 21 like a few years ago... where does the time go? Anyways, I don't think 30 is old by any means, but it's a depressing thought for me because I'm not exactly where I thought we would be. This wanting a baby, and not getting pregnant thing is getting old. :( How come the show 16 and Pregnant makes it look so easy?? All kidding aside, we are still very hopeful that this is our year. I shared more about this long road we've been on here back in May. Read the post here.

3. I'm doing the Whole30 right now and I can think about is food :( I want a vanilla latte soooo badly and some ice cream would be nice too. How is it that I'm only 5 days in and I'm already sick of all the food. UGH! Anyone have any good snack ideas? We have been eating nuts, fruit, salami, veggies with guacamole, lara bars, etc. I also ordered the whole30 approved RX bars so I'm excited to try those!

4. I am trying to pick my focus word of the year it's actually stressing me out lol! Of course it is... maybe my word should be de-stress lol! I have a lot of goals this year but also there is a lot of unknown in our lives right now that we have no control over. I'm going back and forth between strengthen, mindset, brave, and belief. These are all things that I want to focus on but I'm not sure what word encompasses them all. Stay tuned for when I actually figure it out hah! I'll be sure to do a blog post on it. If you want to see my word from 2016, click here.

5. Now, that we the Christmas tree is put away and we have moved our furniture around, we have a big space near our kitchen table. I want to put in a bar cart but everything I've seen is so expensive. I know Mark could probably make one for us but I need to find something that doesn't require welding.

Other confession posts... one, two, three...

Have a great weekend!

What I Read in 2016

For the last two years, I set a goal to read 50 books and this year I came up pretty short. I was so bummed because I read pretty fast but this year was just BUSY. Oh well... I still think my total was pretty good! I'm not setting a reading goal this year because I want to take the pressure off. Reading should be enjoyable, not work lol!

I feel like I'm missing a few but this was what I had on my list :) I'll be posting my favorites of the bunch soon!

Christmas Break Part 2

Good morning everyone! I am back at work today and feeling the post-break blues. Don't get me wrong, I am SO excited to see my friends and the kiddos but hate waking up early. We had a later start today, which was a nice transition. Tomorrow will be a rude awakening though haha!

The rest of Christmas break seemed to just fly by! We came back to San Diego on Wednesday and had dinner with the Wooster fam. It was so fun to see everyone, especially since it's hard to get everyone in the same place. I'm in love with little Emi... she's precious.

The next few days were spent unpacking, doing laundry, putting away Christmas presents, and just trying to get life organized. We also watched Star Wars episodes 4, 5, 6, and 7. :) Since we saw Rogue One on Monday, we figured we should continue watching after that. So fun to watch the first 3 movies, which I love so much.

Greg left for Vegas and I tried to get a picture of him in his uniform. Since he wouldn't put it back on, I took a picture of him getting in his truck haha. We miss you already!

We also had a really fun night out on New Years Eve. We started at our house with takeout Thai food and games. Then we headed to Harbortown for their New Years Eve party. It ended up being an interesting night but we had a great time.

Champagne cupcakes

A little wet from the rain but still having fun!

The next morning, we went to our favorite breakfast place, To The Point. I should say, it used to be our favorite place. The breakfast portions have gotten smaller and I wasn't very impressed this time. Such a bummer! Mark and I went home to take down all the Christmas decor and put it away. So sad to see it all go! We ended our night with Chinese food for dinner and a random stop at In Cahoots for some line dancing.

It was a great break but I'm ready to take on 2017!
