Five on Friday

It's FRIDAY and it's September! Yay I'm so excited! We are heading to Vegas today to see family, friends, and Baby Davy! I can't wait to meet the little guy!!! I'm linking up with April, Natasha, Christina, Karli, Erika, Narci, and Andrea :) Happy Friday everyone!

1- Serious Hair Help

My hair is way past the point of needing a trim, I need a serious overhaul lol. I haven't gotten my hair cut since Mark came home from deployment which was months ago. It's very grown out and my bangs literally just lay flat to my head. It's bad! My hair stylist moved to Hawaii, boo... I love Devon and she always did a fantastic job. I am going back to my hair stylist in Vegas, Robin. She is equally as fabulous but it means I have to make an extra trip to Vegas every time I want to get it done. It helps that my family and friends live there, plus I love catching up with Robin :) Long story short long, I am getting my hair done on Saturday. Praise the Lord! I want to do something a little different so I've been searching for ideas. Here's what I am thinking...

It's basically a much richer version of how my hair looked this summer. Plus my hair tends to get super brassy as it grows out. I love the golden undertones of Jessica Biel's hair in the pic above. I also wish I was brave enough to do something different with my side-swept bangs. I've had them forever and I hate how I look when they get too long. Ugh!

2- The Perfect Fall Sweater

I've been on a serious hunt for the perfect mustard yellow sweater. I know I am way late to the game since it was a trend a few years ago but I still want to find one. I think the color can be super flattering especially on brunettes. Here are a few inspiration photos...

Found here

I haven't found any mustard sweaters in stores lately that I like.  All these pics are from a few years ago so I'm not having any luck there. If anyone has any ideas let me know! Thanks :)

3- Tone It Up Workouts

I have a membership at Orange Theory Fitness but I haven't been working out there as much as I normally do. It's mainly because with school just starting I'm pretty exhausted everyday and I haven't wanted to commit to a specific workout time.  I have been doing a ton of workouts at the track lately though. I love that I can workout outside and change up my routine a little. I've been walking and/ or doing sprint intervals and then lots of body weight workouts. I have been using a few of the Tone It Up workouts and I love the new one they posted this week. It's simple but effective... my thighs were on fire!

4- The Pioneer Woman Cookware

Isn't the cow milk holder so cute??
Get Ree's Cookware here

Ree's cookware, bakeware, and dinnerware line just launched online at walmart.com. I am obsessed! Everything is so adorable in a country chic/ eclectic way. Her line totally reminds me of her and is true to her down to earth and sweet style. Several items are already out of stock which seriously bums me out. I'm excited for them to launch in store so I can actually seem them in person. Here are a few of my favorites though.

5- Smoke Break by Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood's song Smoke Break is so good! I can't get enough of it!

Transitional Fall Outfit

Striped T-shirt dress
I love an outfit that can be worn all throughout the year with just a few changes to make it season appropriate. A co-worker of mine was wearing this striped dress the other day and I fell in love with it. I love that its a light and comfy t-shirt material, perfect for work or at home. It's fitted at the top but has a nice flowy look to it throughout the rest of the dress. I love that shift dress look, while still looking like I have a shape.

1. Striped T-Shirt Dress
2. Sole Society Hollie Bootie
3. Pave Pebble Bracelet
4. Bird Scarf
5. Pointy Toe Ghillie Flat
6. Tassel Strand
7. Vince Camuto Riley Quilted Tote

I would style it with the lace-up flats (only $45!!) and a long tassel necklace during the spring/ summer. I love the added detail of the scalloped edge on the flats. In the fall I would add ankle booties and a scarf to warm up the look. I love the quilted Vince Camuto Riley bag with both looks. I think the bag is more fall appropriate but could definitely be worn in the spring and summer months. I just got this bag during the Nordstrom sale and it's fifty percent off! Woohoo! I also think the dress would be adorable with this jean jacket.

My Current Skincare Routine

I have a serious skincare obsession. I'm not to the point where I spend a lot of money exactly but I love to read about it, explore new products, and watch youtube videos on skincare routines. Weird, huh? I think it's because I never really knew how to take care of my skin before a couple years ago. I didn't even like to wash my face with more than a gentle bar of soap because I thought it would break me out. Little did I know that I just needed to be consistent with my routine and it would make a world of a difference. I have tried a bunch of products but here is what I have in my rotation at the moment.

1. My Go-To Cleanser

I have been using the Purity Cleanser for the last two years. I love that it's a makeup remover and a cleanser in one. It eliminates one step and that's always good in my book. It leaves your skin feeling clean but still soft (not squeaky clean and tight). It has an interesting, almost "natural" smell to it. I don't love it but I don't mind it either haha. My favorite way to use the cleanser is with my Clarisonic Mia 2. I got this a few years ago for my birthday and I LOVE it! I heard so many great things before I got it but I was nervous about the "purging" stage that tends to happen within the first few weeks of use. Surprisingly enough that never happened to me! YAY! I use it once a day (at night) and sometimes I skip a day. It honestly depends on how tired I am when I'm getting ready for bed haha.

2. Exfoliating is Key

I have very oily skin especially in the humidity. Sometimes oily skin can mimic dry skin (in patches) when you have a build-up of dead skin on your face. I know, gross right? This tends to happen to me around my nose so it's super important that I exfoliate a few times a week to help. **I'm not an esthetician, I'm just relaying information I've learned from lots of reading on the subject. I have used the Lush Sea Salt and I really like it but it can be a little harsh if I use it too often. Lately, I have been using the Yes to Grapefruit Daily Facial Scrub. It's gentle enough to use everyday and it smells heavenly. Plus the $7 price tag doesn't hurt either!

3. Mask Fun

I really love doing facial masks a few times a week. Maybe it's the routine of it or how they make my face feel so smooth and fresh...either way they are my jam. I alternate between a few masks but my favorite is the GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment. It's pricey but it is the best mud mask I have ever used. It pulls out all the gunk in your pores and just makes your face feel fresh and detoxed. I also use it as a spot treatment for those irritable breakouts that seem to pop up overnight. I just put a little bit on the problem area and rinse it off in the morning. Even though it has a hefty price tag you only use a small amount on each application. My mother-in-law bought me the last two jars and each one has almost lasted a year! It's worth every penny.

The Murad Blackhead and Pore Clearing Duo is a newer purchase but quickly became an essential. You take the Step 1 jar and apply a thin layer to any area that has blackheads. After ten minutes you gently massage the scrub into the area and rinse it off. This detoxifies and extracts oil and other build up within your pores. After patting your face dry you apply a thin layer of the Pore Refining Sealer. This helps to tighten pores and reduce the formation of new blackheads in that area. You can see immediate results with these products. I'm excited to see what the areas will look like after using them both for a few months.

I also love the Mario Badescu Cucumber Mask. This is a much more soothing mask with anti-inflammatory properties. It's very calming and non-drying like some of the more detoxifying masks. This mask has a great price point as does most of the Mario Badescu line. There are several more products in the collection that I would love to purchase.

4. A New Found Serum

I've never used a serum before purchasing this little guy. I guess I didn't really understand what they were for and what I would want to target. I'm not saying I don't have problem areas, because I most definitely do, I just think it's hard to find a good serum for oily skin. A few bloggers and YouTubers I follow have raved about the Midnight Recovery Concentrate by Kiehls. They even claimed it was life-changing (for skin of course) so I thought what the heck, I'll give it a chance. I bought it a few weeks ago and I can happily say it's great. It makes my skin feel replenished and smooth in the morning and not overly oily. The smell is a little funky but I'm slowly getting use to it. It can seem counter-intuitive to put an oil on oily skin but it actually helps balance the natural oil production. Weird, I know.

5. Moisturizer

I have tried LOTS and LOTS of moisturizers but I haven't really found the one yet. Lately I have really been liking the First Aid Beauty Oil-Free Mattifying Gel. It's super lightweight but actually keeps my skin moisturized all day long. I don't know if it's totally mattifying but it's better than most others in this area. I've heard the Simple Gel Moisturizer is really good so that's next on my list to try.

**I also use an eye cream as often as I can but the one I'm using right now isn't my favorite. It doesn't have any anti-aging properties, which is a bummer. It just depuffs and brightens. I'm working on using it up so I can buy one that does a little more for my under eye area.

So I'm sure this sounds like a TON of products but these are things I've gotten over the last year(s) and I use slowly. I don't do all of these things in one day or even in one week. I alternate between products and just try to do the most that I can for my skin. I've definitely seen an improvement over the last year so something must be working! :)

What are your favorite skincare products?

My Monthly Mash-Up- August

I read this fun post on Hello! Happiness called the Monthly Lineup and I thought I would "borrow" the idea. Since I'm a teacher I know that the best ideas are stolen ones hehe :) I think it's another fun way to share things that I have been loving and what we have coming up!

What I am wearing:

I have lived in my cuffed shorts all summer. They are technically the boyfriend style but not too baggy where they look unflattering. They are lived-in and comfy...perfect! With my boyfriend shorts I'm normally in a relaxed fit tank or off the shoulder shirt from Old Navy. I swear I shop at other places but everything I've talked about lately is from Old Navy lol. In the summer time it's all about comfort and staying cool, so my outfits always reflect that mindset.

What I am reading:

I have several books started right now and I need to focus on one so I can actually finish them! I am reading Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll, Astronaut Wives Club by Lily Koppel, and The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. I am hoping that I can finish all three this month since I am behind my 50 book goal. I talked about my goal a little more in depth in a previous post and you can check it out here. I am also listening to Circling the Sun by Paula McLain which is the same author who wrote The Paris Wife. I'm having a hard time getting into the book but hopefully something will grab my attention soon!

What I am cooking:

I have been cooking a TON this month. I've made the Honey Lime Enchiladas several times, which is always a hit. I've also been loving grilling. It's just too dang hot inside the house with the oven on. We've grilled teriyaki salmon a few times, a BBQ rub trip-tip, greek chicken kabobs, burgers, and steaks pretty much every Sunday. We love some big juicy ribeyes, with baked potatoes, steamed asparagus, and sautéed mushrooms. Mmm my mouth is watering just thinking about it! I've also done several crock-pot meals because it just makes me nights so much easier. I've made my mom's friend Paula's shredded pork and OH MY GOODNESS it's so good. We use it to make tacos, salads, and then tortilla soup throughout the week. It's a super versatile meal! I've also made a roast lately which is always a staple in our house.

What I am planning:

We have two weddings in one weekend and they happen to be on opposite sides of Nevada. I will be heading up Reno/Tahoe on a Thursday (in October) and going to my good friend Liz's wedding on Friday. Then I'll fly to Vegas on Saturday morning to attend the Moss Wedding. Mark won't be able to come to Liz's wedding because of a work trip but he will be able to go to the Moss wedding. Woot woot!

What I am watching:

I currently have 55 episodes of the Pioneer Woman recorded on our DVR. Yikes, maybe I should go in and delete some??? I love watching her cooking show and I always get some fresh ideas on things to cook. Mark and I were stuck on True Detective this season. It wasn't nearly as good as the first season but it sucked us in anyways. We've also been watching Ballerz on HBO, which is so random for me because that's not normally my jam. It's pretty good though! As I mentioned last week, we are Big Brother fans. Now that we are getting down to the last few weeks it's getting really exciting. I can't wait to see who won the HOH comp and who is coming back in the house from the Jury! To be honest none of the summer shows have been super exciting to me and I think it's because I'm holding out for Game of Thrones to come back!

What I am craving:

Fall beer. Mmm! I love Octoberfest and other pumpkin-y beers that come out in the fall. My friend Breyen and I always send each other pictures of new fall beers that we have tried. He beat me this year and sent me the first one. Hopefully I will get my first 6-pack of Octoberfest soon! Update: I found Not Your Father's Root Beer at Trader Joe's today. My cousin from the east coast told me about it so I'm excited to try it!
